BIO: MIA STEPHENS

Mia Stephens has been an artist for the past 20 years, specialising in floral art and ceramics. Her practice encompasses having solo and group exhibitions, teaching, public and private commissions. She has worked for 15 years in bushland management at Eco repair.

Mia describes her floral art process as Found Flowers. She employs an environmentally aware approach to produce thematic arrangements, at times reflecting specific seasons or inspired by particular places. Mia’s aim in creating arrangements is to re-value much overlooked plants and flowers; her process entails using invasive weeds species collected from various locations.

Additionally, she incorporates indigenous, native and other ornamental plants when appropriate. Experience and knowledge of the bush contributes to her emphasis on engaging ecologically responsible techniques for Found Flower arrangements.

Mia’s ceramics include wheel-thrown ware and sculptural hand-built works. Her last solo exhibition was 100 Green Plates (2012), and recent commissions for the Carrajong-inspired Pods series, outdoor ceramic sculptures.
